THE VARANGIAN GUARD

The historical reenactment club, “Varangian Guard” was founded in 2006 by Viktor Viktorovich Filozov. The historical era is the “Viking Age” of the 9th-11th centuries, the very time when the Kievan Rus culture was developed as Swedish (and other) vikings entered into the geographical area of what is now modern day Russia

Over the years, club members have developed a large number of historical projects, which include a number of educational programs for children and adults. The club has been cooperating for a long time with the State Historical Museum and many scientific institutions in Russia and Europe.

Club members have repeatedly become winners of various historical tournaments and festivals. Tournaments such as “Spear Master” and “Free Choice” invented by the club members have become very popular at many international festivals. The head of the club developed the “Spear Master” training, which allows fighters to master this weapon.

Club members are actively involved in experimental archeology and education of medieval crafts. The head of the club has been manufacturing historical footwear for many years, and conducts master classes in medieval leatherworking. Some members of the club are experts in historical costumes from the early Middle Ages.

The club actively cooperates with various clubs from many countries of the world and participates in the international project, “Brothers in Arms” which includes the most famous clubs from Europe: Ulfhettner (Germany), Kruki (Poland), Medvezhia Zastava (Estonia). This project helps to unite people who love the early Middle Ages. In the future, we hope that the United States will be a member, as well.
