RIBE VIKING CENTER IN DENMARK

The Ribe Viking Center was a pleasant surprise for us. Somehow we had missed the Ribe Viking Museum (I blame it on the infernal GPS unit in our rented Skoda SUV. It got us lost trying to reach the ferry port going to Norway from Denmark, as well.) The Center, itself, is a reconstructed Viking settlement with staffed by knowledgeable reenactors, a Viking market, a farm and hands-on activities. Ir is one of the best reconstructions the Viking Age I’ve seen and one’s photo opportunities are endless.

As for the town of Ribe, its origins date back to the Viking Age, around 700-800CE, where it served as a crucial trading hub and port. As such, it became a crucial trading center between Scandinavia and Western Europe.
