Borre / Midgard Viking Centre & Viking Market in Norway
As part of our 2024 journey to the Viking lands, we visited the Midgard Viking Centre near the Borre burial mounds, which form one of Norway’s most important cultural heritage sites. The mounds played a central role in Europe’s Viking history, from 600CE to 900AD. The museum, itself, has interesting exhibits that show a variety of aspects of the Viking Age. There is a Viking guildhall at Midgard, a magnificent reconstruction of one of the Viking era’s major mead halls. Large parts of the building are built by hand and with period appropriate tools. Inside, beautiful woodcarvings show off the Vikings’ extraordinary decorative woodcarvings.
While there, we also had an opportunity to experience a large Viking market, with hundreds of reenactors in kit, wandering around or beside tents, selling their wares or giving demonstrations of Viking crafts.
